Acura SLX Speaker FAQ

What speakers should I replace first in my Acura SLX for the biggest sound improvement?

Replace the front door panel speakers first. These 6.5 inch drivers handle most of your music's detail and vocal range. The front position gives you better stereo imaging than the B-pillar location. You'll notice clearer mids and improved bass response immediately. The B-pillar speakers can wait - they're mostly for rear fill anyway.

Can I install component speakers in both locations on my Acura SLX?

Yes, both the front door panel and B-pillar locations accept component systems. The front doors work better for components though. You get proper tweeter placement at ear level. B-pillar components might create weird imaging since the tweeters end up behind you. Most people run components up front, coaxials in back. Power handling around 50-75 watts RMS should be plenty for either location.

Why does my Acura SLX have speakers in both the door and B-pillar?

Factory setup uses both for fuller sound coverage. The door speakers handle primary stereo duties while B-pillar speakers fill the rear soundstage. It's actually pretty smart - gives you four-point imaging instead of just left/right. Problem is the factory speakers are usually underpowered. Maybe 15-20 watts each. Upgrading to aftermarket 6.5 inch speakers with higher sensitivity ratings will wake up the whole system.

What impedance should I look for in 6.5 inch replacement speakers for my Acura SLX?

Stick with 4-ohm speakers. The factory head unit probably expects this load. Most quality aftermarket 6.5 inch speakers come in 4-ohm anyway. Going to 2-ohm might stress the amplifier. 8-ohm speakers will sound quieter unless you add external amplification. Frequency response matters more than impedance though - look for speakers that go down to at least 55Hz and up to 20kHz.

Do I need to modify the mounting when upgrading the Acura SLX speaker locations?

Usually not much modification needed. Both locations use standard 6.5 inch mounting. The depth might be tight in the doors though. Measure before buying - some aftermarket speakers are deeper than factory units. You might need mounting brackets or spacers. The B-pillar location typically has more clearance. Wire gauge should handle most aftermarket speakers, but check if you're going high-power.
