Speaker Types
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Subwoofer | A large driver for the lowest bass notes, typically from about 20 Hz to 120 Hz. It is usually installed in a separate enclosure and works alongside the other speakers. |
Additional Notes
- The below-seats location positions speakers in an enclosed, low-profile space beneath the seating structure, where airspace and mounting depth are constrained by the vehicle floor and seat chassis geometry.
- An 8-inch driver in the below-seats position benefits from the proximity to the vehicle floor, which acts as a boundary surface and reinforces low-frequency output through acoustic coupling.
- The 8-inch diameter represents a mid-large woofer cone area, producing sufficient piston displacement to generate the low-frequency pressure levels required for bass reproduction in an enclosed cabin.
- Subwoofers are dedicated low-frequency transducers, typically operating below 80 to 120 Hz, and are designed to reproduce bass and sub-bass content that smaller full-range drivers cannot efficiently produce.
- Mounting speakers below the seats takes advantage of the relatively sealed underbody cavity, which can function as an enclosure and influence the subwoofer's low-frequency extension and output efficiency.
- The BMW 740Li xDrive below-seats subwoofer compatibility spans the 2013 through 2015 model years, establishing a consistent 8-inch subwoofer fitment across all 3 listed years.
- Subwoofers are non-directional at low frequencies, meaning the below-seats mounting position does not compromise perceived bass localization within the passenger cabin.
- The physical clearance beneath the seats of the BMW 740Li xDrive determines the maximum basket depth and overall speaker height that an 8-inch subwoofer replacement must conform to for proper fitment.
